How do you prevent Unexplained Infertility?

how do you prevent unexplained infertility

Unexplained Infertility is the diagnosis given to couples who have been trying to conceive for at least a year without success and without any medical explanation. Receiving this diagnosis is understandably frustrating – it’s essentially a diagnosis that means “we have no clue what’s wrong with you.” And yet it is becoming more and more common. So how do you prevent Unexplained Infertility in the first place?

Plan ahead.

Put some strategies in place, for what you’ll do if you don’t get pregnant immediately. Make sure there are other fulfilling things going on in your life, aside from trying to have a baby. It might even be worth it to stop “trying” for a while. Keep having sex, when you want to and without contraception, but take the pressure off turning every intimate moment into an opportunity to get pregnant. It’s understandable to want to control the entire process but, like most things in life, this isn’t completely under your control. Just like you can’t choose the sex of your baby, you can’t choose exactly when you’ll get pregnant. Even if you went the route of IUI or IVF, there are no guarantees.

Look after your mental health.

This means dealing with excess stress, of course, but also addressing any other issues you might be facing, such as anxiety and/or depression. Many of the lifestyle changes we recommend for fertility can also improve mental health. Sometimes you need extra support though, and there’s absolutely no shame in seeking the help of a professional. Talking to a counsellor can be incredibly beneficial. But so can seeing a naturopathic doctor or acupuncturist, who might be able to address chemical and hormonal imbalances that could be contributing to your mental state.

Look after your physical health.

Cut down on your alcohol and caffeine consumption (but you don’t have to completely cut it out). Reduce the amount of junk and fast food you eat and replace it with whole foods and more plants. Make sure you’re getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night and exercising regularly, but not too intensely.
